Annabelle's Fuchsia Garden

À la recherche du temps perdu. A vintage postcard from Annabelle’s Fuchsia Garden in Fort Bragg, Calif. run by Annabelle Stubbs and her husband, Bud.

Annabelle Stubbs (1913-2003) was a prolific hybridizer who produced such enduring favorites as
Fuchsia ‘Pink Marshmallow’, ‘Peachy’, and ‘Taffeta Bow’. In fact, she registered almost 70 new introductions between 1970-1997. Annabelle helped found the local branch of the American Fuchsia Society and turned Fort Bragg into a veritable fuchsia mecca in its time. Other famous area nurseries were Fuchsiarama and Regine’s Fuchsia Garden.

For family reasons, Annabelle and Bud later moved to Southern California to reopen a nursery there. Then came a move to Eureka, California and finally back to Southern California for the Stubbs at the end of their lives.

Alas, the appearance of fuchsia gall mite eventually ended the Golden Age of Fuchsias in California altogether and the once famous fuchsia scene of Fort Bragg has mostly passed from view.
