Fuchias in the City
Two Bibliographies
All the books you need on fuchsias.
Of course, every gardener needs books. The only thing we love more than actually growing things, is reading about growing things. In colder climates, this is especially true of the deepest, darkest days of winter when most gardeners garden in the imagination. Books are invaluable to growing things. As invaluable as fertilizer is to the fields and pots are a gardener's books. In fact, they might almost be considered as the same thing.

It’s not quite by accident that a book’s pages are called leaves and the ultimate origin of the word “book” itself stems from the elegant and mysterious beech tree and our long-forgotten habit of writing our secrets on its thin wooden slats. While nothing seems to have been written on leaves of fuchsiawood, there are still lots of books on fuchsias printed on regular old wood-pulp paper.

I’ve included a few magazine articles in the list, too. For further academic study, all the scientific titles are grouped together at the end.

Of course, this bibliography is by no means complete. It's concentrated primarily on works in English. If you’re know any title that really should be here, you can email me the citation and I’ll be only too glad to add it in. There’s a “Contact Me” link at the bottom this page for that.

Please note that most of these publications are out of print. To make your quest for knowledge a little bit easier, I've featured links to some recent titles that are still available through Amazon. Otherwise, you might have to search antiquarian bookshops, or perhaps alibis.com on, to have your own copies. Good hunting!

  • Scientific Bibliography
Scientific publications & references since Munz
This is the list of scientific literature on Fuchsia, or those articles or books incorporating some major aspect of it in the research.

The renowned California botanist, Philip A. Munz (1892-1974), first brought much-needed order to the genus with his ground-breaking work, “A Revision of the Genus Fuchsia (Onagraceae),” published in 1943 in an fiftieth-anniversary Festschrift for another renowned California botanist, Alice Eastwood, at the California Academy of Sciences. That fuchsias were to be the subject of Munz's paper in this volume was not quite arbitrary.

The treatment was a perfect tribute to Eastwood who was intensely interested in the plants, both in science and in the garden: She was one of the influential co-founders of the American Fuchsia Society in 1929. Except for the large number of Peruvian fuchsias treated together in
Flora of Peru by James Francis McBride at the Field Museum, most fuchsia species had been published in fits and spurts, here and there.

The scientific works on this page follow from Munz's publication as an appropriate starting point.

Since the most recent research by botanists usually supersedes the older, this list is organized by date from the top down rather than alphabetically by author.

An asterisk marks major publications dealing primarily with
    Fuchsia.
