Sadly, Ron and Deb Monnier closed their wonderful nursery in the Fall of 2009. It’s not an understatement to say that the loss of this specialty nursery has left a huge hole in the hearts of fuchsiaphiles and countless other customers and friends across the country. Not only was it a fantastic source of mail-order fuchsias, they also maintained what were probably some of the most extensive fuchsia test beds for hardiness in the United States. And they managed to hybridize some excellent fuchsias, too. Fortunately, they’ll continue that effort in retirement so we can look forward to more fuchsias like DebRon’s Beau Dean Richard which has managed to hang in there in my garden over this long, hot summer of 2010. It was originally thought to be half-hardy by Ron Monnier but growers in the Portland area have since been testing it, and most of the other DebRon hybrids, and now report that most appear to be quite winter hardy in the ground there as well. Let's hope that additional testing in even colder areas further extends the winter range of these beautiful hybrids. Certainly, I'll have a go at a few in Manhattan.
