Fuchias in the City
Weidners Gardens
Encinitas, California

Like the swallows to Capistrano, Weidners has been an annual spring draw to its fuchsias, especially its sumptuous hanging baskets. Not just ordinary hanging baskets, either, but many bowers of the large, double California cultivars for which the state has been rightfully famous since breeders here first started breeding them in the Forties. Ones known the world over. Southgate. Voodoo. Pink Marshmallow. Swingtime. Dark Eyes. The list goes on. And on. If you are in Southern California, especially during the spring, a pilgrimage to Weidners Gardens shouldn't be missed. In fact, the nursery should always be on any plant pilgrimage route. And the swallows do fly overhead on their way back to Mission San Juan de Capistrano, also located on the coast just a little further to the north. Don't miss that either.
