The University of California Botanical Garden was established in 1890 by Edward L. Greene, the first head of the Department of Botany, as a collection of the native trees, shrubs, and herbaceous plants of California and its neighboring states of the Pacific Coast. The collection quickly grew to 1,500 species by the first decade but then expanded its scope to include plants from all continents and now numbers about 10,000 species. Originally located on the north side of campus, the garden included a large glass conservatory modeled after the London Crystal Palace built in 1894. The conservatory was razed in 1924 for campus development and the garden moved to its present location on 34 acres in Strawberry Canyon. It was only in 2005 that a new entrance was completed to replace the chain-link gate used by both visitors and garden vehicles.
