Late afternoon on the High Line
Monday, January 07, 2013
The winter sky was clear and the sunset looked to be promising so my friend and I couldn’t resist a detour on the walk home to take a stroll along the High Line before dark. Boy were we right. Everything glowed in the low golden light of the late afternoon in a way that it almost never does during the summer. Winding our way slowly along the long trail we encountered treat after treat, from the chalky white trunks of the birches to the dried heads of summer’s flowers which still seemed to radiate a life of their own. And the mahonias were in full, fragrant bloom! The magic finally dimmed but we were still walking high above the streets practically the rest of the way home.
